Jonathan Meek recently completed an estate plan for me. To understand my 5 star rating, I need to provide a bit of background on how many lawyers approach the estate process. To be fair, estate planning is highly complex and we personally know of many people who have started the process and thrown in the towel and didn't complete their estate plan because it is too complex and sometimes it’s difficult to understand each of the documents. What makes matters worse is that many law firms start with templates for each type of estate document and demand that you not stray from the template even if it doesn't apply to your situation and should be stripped out. These standard templates also include terms that no reasonable person would want in their estate documents - things like letting your power of attorney representative borrow against your home or your credit cards if you are incapacitated or letting the trustee of your revocable living trust engage in self-dealing. While I understand that templates help lawyers keep the number of hours they spend on a given estate plan at a reasonable level, a good lawyer will take the time to understand your goals and recommend helpful edits to these document templates. That's where Jonathan Meek brought a huge amount of value to my estate process. His edits were thoughtful and usually right on target. In some cases, after he understood my goals, he came up a much better way to make these edits than I had when I first proposed these changes. When you're working on your own estate plan, take the time to figure out the tax implications of decisions you're considering and don't ask your lawyer to burn up his or her valuable time doing this research for you. Also, take the time to contact the custodians of your financial accounts and ask them exactly what is going to happen with your assets are retitled into the trust versus the trust being named as a beneficiary upon your death. By temporarily stepping into the shoes of your trustee and understanding exactly what is going to happen, you'll find the right things that you'll need to adjust in your trust. As I learned more about how my assets would be covered by the trust, Jonathan Meek came up with great solutions and the best wording for the estate documents to make everything work the way I wanted them to. Finally, I really appreciated Jonathan's approach and responsiveness when it came to the process we would use for socializing possible changes to my estate documents with each other. Jonathan Meek is licensed in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. If you're looking for a great estate plan lawyer in any of these states, Jonathan has earned my highest possible recommendation. I ran into 2 other law firms in the Charlotte metro area that demanded that I use their lousy templates for my estate plan and fought with me on every single edit. Requested a conference get advise on legal rights regarding a lien the was discovered on my title. Jonathan  was very knowledgeable about the law and statutes regarding lien enforcement.  After taking his suggestions with no result. He went above and beyond, by reaching out our underwriter attorney and helped to resolved the problem.
